Olympic bronze medallist Parchment clocks Jamaica national record in Eugene

Parchment clocks Jamaican National Record at Prefontaine Classic

By Dania Bogle

Olympic bronze medallist Hansle Parchment clocked a new Jamaican record 13.05 seconds to win the men’s 110m hurdles at the Prefontaine Classic IAAF Diamond League meeting in Eugene, Oregon on Saturday.

Parchment lowered his previous best 13.16 to race in ahead of Cuba’s Orlando Ortega 13.08 and the USA’s David Oliver 13.10.

The much anticipated clash between Jamaicans Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Veronica Campbell-Brown failed to live up to expectation as the Olympic champion Fraser-Pryce clocked wind-aided 10.71 seconds to win the women’s 100m ahead of Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare.

Campbell-Brown pulled in a time of 10.78 seconds ahead of her countrywoman Kerron Stewart in 10.97.

Nickel Ashmeade was the other Jamaican winner coming off the curve in front but challenged to the line as he won the mnes’200m in a time of 20.14 seconds.

The USA’s Walter Dix posted 20.16 for second while another Jamaican, Jason Young, was third in 20.20.

Justin Gatlin led a USA trifecta in the men’s 100m blowing in at a time of 9.88 ahead of  Mike Rodgers (9.94) and Ryan Bailey 10.00.

Grenada’s Kirani James suffered a rare defeat at the hands of the USA’s Lashawn Merritt. The Olympic champion had to settle for second in the men’s 400m as Merritt posted 44.32 seconds to win with James clocking a time of 44.39.

In the women’s equivalent Botswana’s Amantle Montsho demolished the field clocking 50.01 as the USA’s Francena McCorory clocked 50.37 with Jamaican Novlene Williams-Mills posting 51.14 seconds for third.
